Can you rent without a credit card and without a security deposit? Yes, eligible offers exist, but the two conditions must both be confirmed for your booking. A debit-card offer is not automatically deposit-free, and a zero-excess policy is not automatically a zero-deposit rental.

Three questions that change the booking

When planning a rental, separate the money you pay for the car from the money you need available at collection. Then look at your responsibility if something goes wrong. Those are three different parts of the decision.

What the main rental terms mean
TermWhat to establishWhat not to assume
No credit card requiredThe offer accepts another specified payment method or explicitly requires no card at collection.Every debit, prepaid or virtual card will be accepted.
No security depositThe booked offer removes the security guarantee normally required for the car.You have no responsibility for damage or other charges.
Zero excessThe agreement reduces the stated damage or theft excess, subject to its conditions and exclusions. The supplier also removes every deposit.
Online protectionCheck whether it reimburses eligible costs or changes the supplier’s rental terms.Buying it automatically changes the card accepted at the counter.

DiscoverCars currently describes a No Deposit option on eligible fully prepaid bookings: no security deposit or payment card is required for the car at collection. Optional extras bought locally can still require an accepted payment method. The option does not remove contractual liability and is not insurance. Check that this option is actually included in the selected offer; it is not a general promise for every search result.

Start with the exact destination, collection and return times, and the main driver’s age. If you cannot provide a credit card, make that an essential condition from the beginning. A cheaper price is not useful if you cannot collect the vehicle.

  1. Open a relevant comparison. Use Viagioo’s English guide to no-credit-card and no-deposit car rental, then search your destination and dates.
  2. Apply the available filters. Look for the relevant card and deposit options. Where the partner offers “No Deposit” or “No Card Required”, check the offer details as well as the filter label.
  3. Read the supplier’s conditions before payment. Find the accepted cards, the main-driver requirement, the security amount, age rules and required documents. Save the conditions with your voucher.
  4. Resolve anything unclear. Ask the booking partner or supplier to confirm the precise arrangement in writing. “Debit cards accepted” without details about collection and the deposit is incomplete information.

If no suitable offer appears, try a different vehicle class, another collection time, or a nearby rental office. Compare the transport cost and opening hours of that alternative. Do not choose an inconvenient office simply to obtain a favourable label.

A useful question to send before booking:

“For this vehicle, location and date, can the named main driver collect the car with the payment method I have? What security amount, if any, is required, and are there additional conditions or mandatory purchases?”

Why paying online does not settle the deposit question

The payment method used to reserve a car and the security guarantee required by the rental office can be different. On a standard deposit-based offer, DiscoverCars’ Full Coverage alone does not remove the supplier’s deposit requirement. Its standard reimbursement protection is distinct from a waiver applied to the rental agreement. Treat any separately booked No Deposit arrangement as a separate feature, and read its own terms.

If your offer requires a card, confirm the card type, whose name must appear on it, and the amount that must remain available. Avoid relying on a phone wallet or a family member’s card unless the supplier expressly accepts that arrangement for this booking.

Compare cost and available cash separately

Make a short comparison sheet for two or three suitable offers. Record the amount payable now, any balance due at collection, mandatory local charges and the separate security requirement. Add the extras you actually need: an additional driver, a child seat or a one-way return can change your preferred option.

Illustrative example, not a live offer: Rental A costs €240 and requires an €800 temporary hold; Rental B costs €290 and has a confirmed zero security deposit. B costs €50 more, while A requires more available spending capacity during the trip. The €800 hold is not automatically an €800 rental charge. Decide using both the final price and the funds you can make available.

Also note cancellation conditions and whether your plans include crossing a border. Keep the written booking details accessible offline. Our airport car hire checklist takes you through the next stage, from packing your documents to inspecting the car.

Before you book

Does no credit card mean I can pay cash?

No. Check the payment methods explicitly accepted for the booking and for any local purchases. Do not infer cash acceptance from a “no credit card” label.

Does no deposit mean I cannot be charged afterwards?

No. The rental agreement can still make you responsible for damage, missing fuel, fines, tolls and other applicable charges.

What if the conditions are different at the desk?

Show your saved voucher and conditions. Ask the supplier and booking partner to explain the difference before you accept a changed contract or an extra charge. Keep the written response and relevant receipts.
